Metal – a love affair

Updated: May 17, 2020

It's time for a confession - I wasn’t always a Metalhead.

In the past I have always liked Rock Music. But I started my life as a fan of Pop Music.

Growing up, we always listened to Pop, Motown and Disco. If it was in the charts, we listened to it. I remember listening to the Bee Gees, Jackson 5, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross as a child.

It wasn’t until I was in my late twenties that I started to listen to Rock Music. I was going through an Indie phase, plus I was getting fed of listening to Pop and Dance music. It was soulless and was starting to sound the same. I already liked 80's and 90's metal.

During that time, we had Sky TV where we had Kerrang and Scuzz TV. I would turn over to either channel for a welcome change. Kerrang was my preferred choice at that time, with a lot of Punk, Emo and some Metal.

I had started to listen to the likes of My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Fall Out Boy and KISS. As time went on, I noticed I was drawn to heavier songs. By that time I was listening to symphonic Metal such as Nightwish, Within Temptation and later Delain.

My tastes have gotten much heavier with time, earlier last year I went to Lords of the Land, a Death Metal festival and earlier than that Arch Enemy.

I honestly don’t see the difference between the different Metal genres. If I like a song, I will listen to it and add it to my playlist. It doesn’t matter what genre it is.

I love the music, I love the Metal community. We build each other up and encourage others to be bigger and better. We look after each other. You don’t find this kind of community in any other genre of music.

I love my tribe of Metalheads.
